Hi Walter,

Joel B. Madaris, Co E, 1 SGT, enlisted in Huntingdon Tenn on 6/28/62 for
three years and was mustered at Humboldt on 8/11/62, age 34.  He was ƒ'10"
tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, auburn hair, born in Madison Co Tennessee,
a farmer,  He was married at the time to Mary ?.  He was captured the first
time at Trenton by Nathan Bedford Forrest in Dec 62 and was paroled to Camp
Chase, Ohio to await exchange.  Eventually he was exchanged, would have
spent some time in the fall of 1863 at Grand Junction, Tenn.  The regiment
was transferred to Union City, Tenn in 1864.  There it was captured by
Forrest's troops again on March 24, 1864 and taken to Andersonville Prison
in Georgia.  When Andersonville was threatened  some men were taken to
smaller prisons.  Joel apparently was taken to Savannah where he died on
9/20/64.  He is probably buried in Savannah with no marker.  If you are
interested in the experiences of the men of the 7th in Andersonville and
the smaller prisons try http://www.stkusers.com/lindas/history.html.  In
the 1890 veteran's census his widow lived at Buena Vista in Carroll County.

In the 1860 census of Carroll Co he is living in the 18th district of
Carroll County, age 32, Mary 33, Martin 11, Elijah 9, Columbus 5, Benjamin
6/12.  In the 1850 he is 21, mary H 22 and Martin G 1 in the 18th district.
There is a Benj W H and a D. H. Medaris in the 1840 but no one by this name
in the 1830.

I have no name to go with his middle initial.  I see you have "Bug" as the
name.  Peggy Scott Holley
